Why is it important to recycle old PV panels?

Old PV panels contain valuable materials such as glass, aluminum and other metals that can be reused. By recycling, we prevent the loss of these raw materials and reduce the amount of waste. Moreover, a small proportion of PV panels contain harmful substances that can pose a risk to the environment if processed incorrectly. PV CYCLE Belgium ensures that this process is sustainable and safe, thus contributing to a circular economy and the preservation of our planet.

Am I responsible for collecting and disposing of old PV panels myself?

As an individual, you can hand in old PV panels at one of PV CYCLE Belgium's collection points. Producers, importers and distributors of PV panels are legally obliged to organize the collection and processing of used panels. They can join PV CYCLE Belgium for this purpose. Joining PV CYCLE Belgium is not mandatory, but it offers a simple and cost-effective way to meet your legal obligations. If you choose not to join, you must submit an individual plan to the regional authorities and obtain approval.

Is PV CYCLE Belgium a government organization?

No, PV CYCLE Belgium is not a government organization. It is a private non-profit organization founded by several sector federations. However, we are audited by the regional authorities to ensure that we meet the legal requirements for the collection and recycling of PV panels.

Can I also go to PV CYCLE Belgium for inverters or home batteries?

No, PV CYCLE Belgium is solely responsible for the collection and recycling of solar panels. For inverters, you can go to Recupel, and for home batteries to Bebat. These organizations specialize in the processing of electrical appliances and batteries respectively.

Are there costs associated with the collection and processing of PV panels?

For individuals and companies who hand in PV panels at one of our collection points, the service is free, provided the panels meet the conditions. Collection and processing are financed through an environmental contribution of €1.50 per PV panel, charged by manufacturers and importers at the time of sale. This contribution is explicitly mentioned on the invoice of the new panels.

Where can I return my old PV panels?

You can hand in your old PV panels at one of the many collection points across Belgium. Find a collection point near you via our interactive map. Make sure you contact the collection point in advance and that the panels meet our conditions, such as completeness and origin from Belgium. For larger quantities (from 40 panels), we organize an on-site collection.

What is the status of PV panel reuse?

Reuse is an important aspect of our circular approach, but reusing PV panels is currently not easy. There are technical challenges in determining whether a panel is still functioning properly, as well as safety issues to consider. In addition, there needs to be a market for reused solar panels. PV CYCLE Belgium supports the development of a technical report that could facilitate and guide future reuse.
